Woodlands’ Matt James is back for the 2022 SBS Bank Southland Stags.

Matt, 28, has played 27 games for Southland across three seasons with Southland, an impressive statistic for the Loose Forward.

As a senior member of the squad, Matt is excited for what the team can do this season.

“We have been building nicely over the last few years. I can’t wait to see Rugby Park packed out and have the fans back banging the boards on the fence.” said James. 

When asked for a favourite moment in the Stags jersey, Matt highlights Otago in 2020.

“When we finally broke the drought against Otago and the fans came running on the field after the game, that was special”.

Assistant Coach David Hall is thrilled to have Matt back for another season.

“Matt has been the quite achiever in the Southland Stags for the last couple of seasons”. said Hall.

“Week in week out he gets into his work. He has a great work rate and always turns up ready to go whether it is training day or game day. We are looking forward to Matt delivering some big performances in the Stags jersey this season”.

Matt James is playing for Woodlands in the Galbraith Shield Premier Grade of Go Bus Southland Senior Rugby.
