Southland Stags centurion Josh Bekhuis is coming back to Stag Land and will be taking the field once again at Rugby Park.
Josh has just come to the end of his season in Japan playing for Shimizu Blue Sharks.
At 36 years old, with 115 games for the SBS Bank Southland Stags and 110 in Super Rugby, many would agree Josh Bekhuis has already etched his name into Southern Rugby folk law.
However, when approached by head coach Dale MacLeod back in 2020 to come back and be involved in the Southland Setup while back from international duties the seed was sewn.
Bekhuis was involved in coaching the Stags Lineout and set piece to pass on some his knowledge to the young side in 2020.
Fast forward two years, Dale MacLeod and his coaching staff including Josh’s former teammates David Hall and James Wilson are stoked to have Josh back in the squad.
“The possibility to play at home in the Southland Jersey in front of my family is always special, especially giving my own kids a chance to see their father play and get to know how Stags Rugby works on and off the field.”
“They can come join me in the changing room after the game just like I did with my dad when I was their age”, said Bekhuis.
Naturally when thinking of Josh’s impressive career to date, most minds will flash back to the 2009-11 Ranfurly Shield era, a time that remains the highlight for Bekhuis.
“Winning against Canterbury in 2009 remains my favourite memory, especially the reception at the Invercargill airport”, said Bekhuis.
The season ahead also brings the opportunity for Josh to equal Tim Boy’s record for second most games for Southland in history.
For coaching staff, his knowledge and respect for the Stags brand is invaluable.
For head coach Dale MacLeod having Josh's experince returning home is special for a whole lot of reasons.
“The experience and hardened professional edge that he will bring & pass onto our younger players will be invaluable. It's important we get the balance right between our experience and youth blend.
Josh was selected because I know he will bring passion, hold those around him accountable and play for the jersey", said MacLeod.
Josh Bekhuis will be linked with his beloved Star Rugby Club for the remainder of the Go Bus Club.
