Women & Girls in Rugby - Brooke Johnston


In May, Rugby Southland celebrates the Women and Girls in rugby, an occasion to honour and showcase the exceptional women in their community who are making their mark. One such remarkable individual is Brooke Johnston, who serves as the Assistant Strength & Conditioning Trainer for the Southland Stags and Head of Academy Strength & Conditioning.

Brooke's love for rugby began at a young age when she played for the Millers Flat Rippa Rugby team and came in second place at the Otago Primary Schools Tournament. Although she missed out on a trip to Wellington, she still managed to win a Subway 6-inch sub, which she considers a great achievement.

According to Brooke, what is special about rugby in Southland is the passionate fan base, which can be seen and heard in the terraces during home games, as well as the unwavering support from the community across all age grades and levels.

Brooke feels fortunate to have landed a job within Rugby Southland that has enabled her to be surrounded by a fantastic group of knowledgeable people who are willing to help her learn and improve her skills.

Brooke's passion for rugby continues to burn bright. She remains involved in the game as she loved spirit of the sport and the demands it places on players, anything can happen to cause a momentum shift and upset the scoreline, making every game an exciting experience.

Brooke Johnston is an inspiring individual who is making a significant contribution to rugby in Southland. Her love for the game, coupled with her expertise in strength and conditioning, makes her a valuable asset to the Southland Stags and Rugby Southland.
