Debbie Fahey is a woman who wears many hats in the world of rugby in Southland. Not only is she a proud rugby mum, but she is also an accomplished sports photographer. In honour of Women and Girls in Sport Month, we are shining a spotlight on her contributions to the game.
Debbie's passion for rugby began when she played the sport herself. However, she eventually found a new calling as a sports photographer. Debbie is now a regular at Southland Stags games and tries to attend as many schools and club matches as possible, capturing images of players in action. Debbie also lends her support to the Marist Invercargill Rugby Club.
Despite her busy schedule, Debbie still manages to travel to Dunedin to support her son's rugby games. For her, the highlight of shooting rugby is being able to capture the passion of the game and the supporters. Debbie especially enjoys away games, such as the Highlanders U20 tournament in Taupo and the Stags playing at venues around the North Island. However, nothing compares to the atmosphere of Stag Day, when Southland takes on their neighbours Otago. She loves the energy and support of the Southland rugby community.
One of the unique opportunities that Debbie has discovered as a female rugby photographer is the ability to capture angles and images that interest her. She creates her own style, and being a woman gives her a different perspective on the game. Debbie believes that even when two photographers are in the same place, shooting the same play, they will capture completely different photos depending on their interests.
Debbie stays involved in rugby because she feels she is contributing to the game's success. She takes pride in capturing memories and achievements that can be revisited in the future. Whether it's family members who may not have seen the game or players who want to post pictures on their social media feeds, Debbie enjoys bringing joy to others through her photography
Finally, Debbie believes that what makes rugby in Southland so special is the community's support. Even when things are tough, the Southland community gets behind the game. Debbie appreciates how welcoming and supportive the rugby community is at all levels, from junior club rugby to Stags rugby.
In conclusion, Debbie Fahey is a woman who loves rugby and has found a way to contribute to the game in her unique way. As a photographer, she is able to capture the passion and energy of the sport and bring joy to others through her images. Her dedication to rugby is admirable, and she is a true asset to the Southland rugby community.
