After four years of dedicated service, Steve Mitchell has announced his resignation from the role of CEO of Rugby Southland. Mitchell will be returning to his hometown of Nelson after accepting an offer as CEO of Tasman Rugby.
In a heartfelt letter addressed to the Rugby Southland community, Mitchell expressed his gratitude for the support and camaraderie he experienced during his tenure. He reflected on the significant progress made during his time as CEO, emphasizing the growth in playing numbers, improved financial status, and positive changes in representative results and player behavior.
"When I applied for the role, I stated that 3-5 years minimum, and that I intended to set up the systems, fill them with the right people and then head home," Mitchell stated. "I can proudly say that although not completely satisfied, we have achieved, and that Rugby Southland is in a far better position than when I arrived."
Mitchell highlighted several achievements that he and several key current staff contributed towards the positive transformation of Rugby Southland, including strengthened relationships with stakeholders such as the Highlanders, the implementation of an independent judiciary, increased community engagement, and growth in sponsorship and funding.
Acknowledging the collaborative effort required to enact change, Mitchell extended his gratitude to the staff, board members, sponsors, and community members who supported his vision for Rugby Southland. He expressed confidence in the organization's future under the leadership of the current chairman and the dedicated staff.
"With the leadership of our current chairman, the focus of the Board, and growing competency within the staff, I believe that Rugby Southland is in a good position to navigate the complex world of provincial union rugby," Mitchell remarked.
Chairman Murray Brown also conveyed his thanks on behalf of the Rugby Southland Board and staff, wishing Steve and his wife Pam all the best in their future endeavors. "Steve's leadership has been instrumental in guiding Rugby Southland through a period of positive change and growth. Rugby Southland provided a base for Steve to grow personally in the role . Recently the Board moved him from a General Manager role to a CEO as an opportunity to further develop and contribute more strategically to the business. We are grateful for his dedication and wish him the very best in his new role with Tasman Rugby," said Chairman Brown.
As Mitchell prepares to embark on a new chapter in his career, he expressed his best wishes to the Rugby Southland community, thanking them for a challenging yet rewarding journey. He outlined that he would always hold respect for Rugby in Southland and the Stags close to his heart.
The Rugby Southland Board has commenced the search for Mitchell's successor and will work diligently to ensure a smooth transition. Meanwhile, Tasman Rugby eagerly anticipates Mitchell's arrival as their new CEO.
