Division one enters the round two phase tomorrow and it will see a top of the table clash unfold in Winton. Midlands will host second placed Waikaka in what is sure to be a tough, challenging but arguably, even battle.
Midlands have been outstanding over the past seven weeks, winning seven from seven and playing some entertaining rugby in the process, subjectively and statistically speaking. The red and blacks have amassed 227 points (32 PPG) and conceded only 80 points (11 PPG) on the defensive side of the ball.
Coach Dayna Cunninghame has continued building a strong team environment over the past two seasons but this year, the hard work off the field has started to pay dividends. Players like Ben McKerchar and Sam Brame have been an integral part of that leading the side well at trainings and on game day. The team is sprinkled with a group of young up and comers as well with the likes of Henry Earland, Scott McKerchar and Sam Wheeley all impressing so far in 2018.
Week one saw Midlands take a 16-10 win at Waikaka so no doubt the green and whites will be looking to even the ledger. After a slow start to the season Waikaka have shaped up as a real contender in division one winning five games on the trot. Up front Irishmen Scotty Stevenson has been a standout getting through a mountain of work in the tight exchanges. Halfback Dylan Bungard has been a nightmare for opposition defences around the ruck and undoubtedly will ask plenty of questions of the Midlands defence around the fringes.
So will it be Waikaka who make it six in a row or will Midlands keep a perfect record in 2018?
Get along to the Midlands Rugby Club tomorrow to find out.
